Sabbath Practices

Discover rejuvenating Sabbath practices for daily use, fostering rest, replenishment, and renewal.

  • Light a candle at the beginning of your day of rest, or the night before, to mark its Holy significance.

    (Inspired by Jewish Sabbath practices.)

  • Choose a day this week to intentionally disconnect from social media and work-related platforms, focusing on your own self-care and rest instead.

Add regular breaks from screens and digital devices into the rest of your week as an act of resistance against the cultural narrative that glorifies constant busyness and encourages overworking.

  • Make a list of all the ways you believe rest would help make you whole. Use this list as encouragement the next time you know you need to take time to rest.

  • Set aside a few minutes today to schedule various forms of rest—such as family activities, exercise, social hangouts, quiet time, and sleep—into your calendar as non-negotiable appointments for the upcoming week.

Avoid adding new tasks that encroach on your rest time, and if you must reschedule, treat it like any other important appointment by adjusting lower-priority tasks. Prioritizing rest in this way grants you the freedom to be present, flexible, and focused in all areas of life.

  • Set aside some time this week to read and meditate on the gentle invitation extended to you in Matthew 11:28-30. Sit with Jesus’ words and invite him to reframe your thinking around rest, shifting your perspective to see rest as strength.

  • Explore a Visio Divina practice with Bette Dickinson using her guided video, “Sabbath”, to lead you through a sacred time of solitude and reflection. Allow yourself to descend into the depths of stillness and embrace the transformative power of rest.

  • Spend a few moments today designing your own Sabbath, much like planning a cherished vacation.

Reflect on what brings you rest and connection with God. Create a loose plan, noting priorities and what to set aside. Whether quiet contemplation, a prayer walk, time in nature, scripture immersion, or anything else, let your Sabbath be a purposeful oasis in your natural rhythm.
